RUSKE, E. & WEIß, D.: Slugs and their enzymes for the biological
control of Gymnosporangium sabinae
Summary: With the help of microscopic investigations it was found that
the telio- and basidospores of rusts looses the ability to grow after
they have passed the stomach of snails. The assumption that this is
caused by the snail-chitinases was checked. The isolated enzyme
chitinase from Streptomyces griseus inhibits the germination of
teliospores from Gymnosporangium sabinae and Puccinia malvacearum. This
will lead to the question if the use of chitinases is a general method
to control other agricultural important rusts.
